72. Why did the Saviour have to be both God and man?

Jesus Christ had to be both God and man, so that He could become the mediator between His Father in heaven and us sinners on Earth.

Only He Who is truly our Lord and God can help us out of our guilt and misery. We can only trust Him because He is the only one Who fully understands us. This is because Jesus took on our flesh and blood Himself, was born like us, and was entirely like us.

• For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus, who gave Himself a ransom for all. (1 Timothy 2:5-6)
