129. Can we know whether we are God’s children?

Yes, the Holy Spirit brings about the assurance of salvation in the believer. Faith that justifies has:

  1. The assurance of the forgiveness of sins.
    • Son, be of good cheer; your sins are forgiven you. (Matthew 9:2)
    • In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace. (Ephesians 1:7)
  2. The assurance of peace with God through Jesus Christ.
    • Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. (Romans 5:1)
    • He Himself is our peace. (Ephesians 2:14)
    • “For the mountains shall depart and the hills be removed, but My kindness shall not depart from you, nor shall My covenant of peace be removed,”
      says the LORD, who has mercy on you. (Isaiah 54:10)
    • Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. (John 14:27)
  3. The assurance of being a child of God.
    • For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. (Galatians 3:26)
    • Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God! (1 John 3:1)
    • The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God. (Romans 8:16)
  4. The assurance of eternal life.
    • This is the will of Him who sent Me, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have everlasting life. (John 6:40)
    • Rejoice because your names are written in heaven. (Luke 10:20)

This assurance is anchored in the Word of God. The Holy Spirit impresses this on the believer’s heart and reminds him of it again and again.

  • The Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you. (John 14:26)
  • God is not a man, that He should lie, nor a son of man, that He should repent. Has He said, and will He not do? Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good? (Numbers 23:19)
