46. What is the purpose of God’s fourth commandment?
It was not to put a burden on us, but to bless us. We should enjoy His gift of rest for our body and soul. At the same time it reminds us of the redemption accomplished through Jesus Christ.
- The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath. (Mark 2:27)
- Remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the LORD your God brought you out from there by a mighty hand and by an outstretched arm; therefore the LORD your God commanded you to keep the Sabbath day. (Deuteronomy 5:15)
The seven-day week and the holiday are not human inventions, but God’s order of creation; therefore, it must not be changed.
