45. Can an oath be sworn in God’s name without violating the third commandment?

Yes, if the authorities demand it in court or if the circumstances absolutely require that loyalty and truth be affirmed by oath, we can swear to the glory of God and the salvation of our neighbour.

  • The high priest arose and said to Jesus, “I put You under oath by the living God: Tell us if You are the Christ, the Son of God!” Jesus said to him, “It is as you said.” (Matthew 26:62-64)

So Jesus acknowledged the oath in court.
