53. How does the fifth commandment differ from the others?

God added a promise to the fifth commandment.

A long life and prosperity are promised with our obedience, but violating this commandment bears the threat of a severe punishment.

• Honour your father and your mother, as the LORD your God has commanded you, that your days may be long, and that it may be well with you in the land which the LORD your God is giving you. (Deuteronomy 5:16; Ephesians 6:3)
• Whoever curses his father or his mother, his lamp will be put out in deep darkness. (Proverbs 20:20)
