54. What does God command in the sixth commandment?
I may not abuse, hate, insult or kill my neighbour either by my own agency or that of another, in thought, word or deed. Rather, I should put aside any thirst for revenge and neither harm myself nor deliberately endanger myself. That is why God has given the authorities the sword to prevent and punish murder and manslaughter.
- You have heard that it was said to those of old, “You shall not murder, and whoever murders will be in danger of the judgment.” But I say to you that whoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment. And whoever says to his brother, “Raca!” shall be in danger of the council. But whoever says, “You fool!” shall be in danger of hell fire. (Matthew 5:21-22)
- You shall not tempt the LORD your God. (Matthew 4:7)
