57. What does God command in the seventh commandment?

God forbids any passion that goes against the biblical understanding of a lifelong marriage between a man and a woman. God curses all impurity: therefore we should loathe all impurity with all our heart and live in purity and decency – whether married or single.

  • Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. (Genesis 2:24)
  • Now to the married I command, yet not I but the Lord: A wife is not to depart from her husband. (1 Corinthians 7:10)
  • But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. (Matthew 5:28)
  • But fornication and all uncleanness or covetousness, let it not even be named among you, as is fitting for saints; neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor coarse jesting, which are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks. For this you know, that no fornicator, unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. (Ephesians 5:3-5)
  • Flee also youthful lusts; but pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart. (2 Timothy 2:22)
