98. Who is the Holy Spirit?
The Holy Spirit is also at the same time the eternal God along with the Father and the Son.
So He is not just a divine force and gift, but a divine Person.
- God is Spirit. (John 4:24)
- The Lord is the Spirit. (2 Corinthians 3:17)
There is no difference between the Spirit of God and the Spirit of Jesus Christ. It is one divine Spirit, the Holy Spirit, Who is at the same time the Spirit of the Father and the Son; for the Father and the Son are God. So the Holy Spirit is also God Himself.
Some New Testament scriptures show the Holy Spirit speaking words and doing deeds that are ascribed to God in the Old Testament.
Examples:
- Behold, the days are coming, says the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah. (Jeremiah 31:31)
- But the Holy Spirit also witnesses to us; for after He had said before, “This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, says the LORD: I will put My laws into their hearts, and in their minds I will write them,” then He adds, “Their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.” (Hebrews 10:15-17)
